If you are reading this blog post, you probably own or run a small business, non-profit, or church and have often wondered if you have what it takes to do the job well. I get it. For the past 30 years, I have worked as an associate and eventually a director for large churches and non-profits. And even though I was the “leader,” the one to set the department and team’s direction, I found myself continually wondering if I had “what it takes “to do the job and do it well. I believe this is common for any leader.
How I Discovered The Writings Of Donald Miller.
In early 2018 I was working as the Director of Creative Resources for a large church. I was responsible for helping the ministry directors navigate any problems they might be experiencing in their ministry. Overtime working within this role, one issue that consistently rose to the top was clearly communicating what they do. As I pressed each director to share with me the problem they solved and how they helped those involved, all of them struggled to clearly state exactly what it was they did as a ministry.
One morning, I discussed this problem with a co-worker when he shared he had just heard of a book that he thought might help me. It was called “Building A Storybrand: Clarify Your Message So Your Customers Will Listen.” by Donald Miller. I immediately purchased the Kindle version of the book and began to read.
I was only a few sentences into the first chapter when had one of those “Yes!” moments. It’s as though the words that Donald Miller wrote were speaking directly to me and the problem I was experiencing.

The short of it is that I devoured this book and immediately began to implement the Marketing Framework that he had developed within my role at the church. I then used it to build my own website, timyates.com, and then a friend contacted me as asked if I could help him build a website for his new adventure as a missionary to Africa. Once again, I used the framework, he loved it, and then he began to tell his friends. Within a year, I realized that I needed to decide whether to continue in my role at the church or pursue a marketing business on my own. Ultimately, that decision was made for me when I was informed that the church would have to eliminate my position due to financial reasons.
From the earlier success I had experienced following the plan within Building A Storybrand, it was a “no brainer” to decided to go to Nashville, Tennesee in February of 2020 and officially become a Certified Storybrand Guide.
As a Certified Guide but also as a business owner, I can say this about Donald Miller and his work. It is MARKETING GOLD! If you take what he writes and implement it, it works. Plain and simple.
